OUR HISTORY

Our Very Very Brief History

My name is Erin Sylve, and I am the reason this camp has come into existence. It started as an inkling in my mind sometime around January. I had been attending many lectures and luncheons hosted by my university-to-be Texas A&M University. At these meetings, I got introduced to many amazing and influential people who inspired me to further pursue my degree in engineering. As time went on and my emotions were stirred more and more, I began to desire to share this feeling. I wanted to inspire people as well, and so the STEM camp was born.

For those who aren't familiar with the term, STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Some of the highest paying, most respected, and most stable jobs in the world such as doctors and teachers hail from STEM fields.

As I was thinking about my largest problems, namely finding the venue and the children who needed such a service as the one I was aiming to provide, I stumbled upon a church. Mount Gilead Baptist Church is a very small, unassuming church on the edge of the southeast side of town. They do a lot of work in their community and recently have gone to war on the sad state of youth in nearby neighborhoods. Finding my idea to be within their agenda, they took me up, provided the children I needed to inspire and the venue I could inspire these children in.
